Áslaug Íris Katrín Friðjónsdóttir (b.1981) finished her BA in visual arts at Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2006, and an MFA from School of Visual Arts in New York in 2009. She lived and worked in the US for a few years but currently lives and works in Reykjavík. She has exhibited her work in museums and exhibition spaces in Europe, USA and Iceland.

The series COMPOSITIONS OF VISUAL SOUND is based on imagery that can be seen in many of Áslaug’s work.

In these three variations that have been printed on vinyl mats she examines how unique units of shape can both stand alone and independent and at the same time serve as an important part of a bigger system or context. This idea can be applied to any kind of system such as words as units in a system of languages or characters in a logographic alphabet. It can mean individuals that together create communities or buildings within cities. But just as the composer who only has 12 tones to work with, the variety of combinations within the form is limitless. In this series Áslaug draws inspiration from the world of music.
